May is the best month to visit Georgia. ვარდობისთვე (Vardobistve), the month of roses, shines brightest here; ask locals and they’ll start humming Jansugh Kakhidze’s Mova Maisi, “May will come,” and somehow it feels as if everything will be fine once it does, which is exactly why I’d send a first-time visitor to see Georgia at its best in May.
Then, if you’re coming for food and wine, for culture, or simply to see Georgia at its best in another season, I’d choose late September into early October. Why? Because it is the month of wine – October’s Georgian folk name was ღვინობისთვე, Ghvinobistve. And you need another why? Because “Dazzling, coloured lionlike / Was October on the ninth” – Galaktioni, greatest Georgian poet, writing an ode to October, and to his own birthday.

What Is the Best Month to Visit Georgia?
The reasons below are mostly practical, including considerations such as temperature and climate, but they also reflect a number of cultural factors and personal experiences that have shaped the perspective.
Georgia in January
January is a good month to visit Georgia for skiing, winter celebrations and a few days in Tbilisi. Gudauri and Bakuriani are the familiar ski choices; Hatsvali and Tetnuldi bring skiing into a Svaneti trip, with Mestia as a base. A winter stay in Mestia can work, but trekking through the high villages is a summer plan, and mountain roads and resort operations need checking before you travel.
The whole country seems to take its time returning to ordinary life. There’s New Year on January 1, Christmas and Alilo on January 7, Old New Year on January 14, and Natlisgheba, Epiphany, on January 19. Two New Years in one month: have you heard of that anywhere else? Some people mark Epiphany with a cold-water plunge; these take place in Borjomi, in the Mtkvari River, and in other parts of the country as well.
- Temperatures in January: Tbilisi 6°C / -2°C; Batumi 11°C / 4°C; Mestia -6°C / -13°C.
- Weather and planning: Batumi is milder, but this is a winter trip. Snow, road conditions and open lifts matter once you head into the mountains.
Events and holidays
- Paravani Lake, the most dramatic Epiphany plunge: a cross-shaped hole cut in the frozen lake in Javakheti for the boldest.
Places to visit
- Borjomi, the mineral-water park and the Green Monastery make sense even in winter, and it pairs well with Bakuriani.
- Kazbegi, Gergeti Trinity is worth the snow, and the road stays open all winter.
- Abanotubani, Tbilisi’s sulfur baths, the right way to end a cold day.
Georgia in February
February is one of the easiest months to choose if skiing is your reason for visiting Georgia. Start with Gudauri or Bakuriani, or look at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi near Mestia if you want to spend the trip in Svaneti. Tbilisi can make a quieter city break alongside it. February is a harder choice for someone imagining green valleys, long high-altitude walks or swimming in the Black Sea.
February has arrived, and sap in the trees has thrived, goes the saying: in Tbilisi, a mild day may hint that spring is near, while high in the mountains, ski season is still in full swing. Both can be true in Georgia in February.
- Temperatures in February: Tbilisi 8°C / -1°C; Batumi 12°C / 5°C; Mestia -4°C / -12°C.
- Weather and planning: A pleasant afternoon in the city says little about a ski slope. Check the snow, lifts and access road for the resort you choose.
Events and holidays
- Lamproba (ლამპრობა), the Svan torchlight remembrance of ancestors, a reason to be in Mestia beyond skiing; the night varies by village, so ask locally.
- Tbilisi Open Air, winter edition, the summer festival’s electronic lineup moved onto the slopes at Gudauri late in the month.
Places to visit
- Mestia, for the Svan towers and skiing at Hatsvali or Tetnuldi.
- Bakuriani, the Kukushka narrow-gauge train to Borjomi runs through the pines, good on a rest day from the slopes.
Georgia in March
March can give you 2 quite different trips. Gudauri and Bakuriani may still work for skiing, while Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kakheti can form a city and lowland trip with plans flexible enough for unsettled weather. It’s too early to treat the high trekking season as open just because spring has reached the city.
March is windy, sometimes exasperatingly so, and can change its mind about spring several times in a day. March 3 is Mother’s Day, another chance to tell your mother you love her and to see something of Georgia’s cult of the mother: the affection, reverence and sometimes impossible expectations gathered around brave and courageous Georgian women. It’s a subject with more to it than one holiday, but the holiday makes it especially visible.
- Temperatures in March: Tbilisi 12°C / 2°C; Batumi 14°C / 5°C; Mestia -1°C / -8°C.
- Weather and planning: Bring a layer for wind. March can still be a ski month, but it isn’t yet a dependable month for high mountain trekking.
Events and holidays
- International Women’s Day (8 March), a public holiday taken seriously here, flowers everywhere.
- Berikaoba (ბერიკაობა), an old masked spring-fertility festival still held in Kakheti villages near Chailuri, about seven weeks before Orthodox Easter.
Places to visit
- Vardzia and Akhaltsikhe, the cave city and Rabati fortress quarter in the milder south.
- Vashlovani, the semi-desert near Dedoplistskaro, once the dirt roads are dry.
Georgia in April
The weather in Georgia in April makes it a good month for Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti and lower-elevation walks. Spring brings blossom and warmer afternoons, though rain can rearrange an outdoor day, so leave some room in the itinerary. Save high trekking routes in Svaneti and Tusheti for later; April warmth in Tbilisi doesn’t reach every trail.
Titsian Tabidze, another Tabidze, wrote, “I was born in April’s showers, amid the apple blossoms’ flowers,” as a rendering of the opening image in his poem The Landslide. Blossom and rain often arrive together here, giving his April a rhythm that feels less like sunshine alone and more like the season itself: rain, bloom, and renewal in rhyme.
- Temperatures in April: Tbilisi 19°C / 7°C; Batumi 17°C / 8°C; Mestia 4°C / -4°C.
- Weather and planning: Choose walks by elevation. A comfortable spring day in the city can still mean cold, difficult conditions in the mountains.
Events and holidays
- Orthodox Easter, the biggest holiday of the year when it lands in April: red eggs, paska bread, midnight liturgy, public holidays from Good Friday through Easter Monday. The date moves, so check.
- Day of National Unity (9 April), remembrance of the 1989 tragedy on Rustaveli, not a festival.
- Lelo Burti, a three-century-old folk rugby played in Shukhuti, Guria, on Orthodox Easter Sunday.
Places to visit
- Vashlovani and Davit Gareja, at their best in spring, migratory birds back and the heat still manageable.
- Martvili Canyon, though the boat trips depend on the weather.
- Kutaisi, a base for Gelati and Bagrati, the west at its greenest.
Georgia in May
May is the best month to visit Georgia for a first trip centred on Tbilisi, Kakheti, food, wine and time outdoors. There’s enough warmth for long days of exploring without planning everything around summer heat. Batumi is also worth considering in May, especially for a few days of seaside walks, subtropical gardens and a different side of Georgia. Keep one day flexible, though, because May can be wet, and distinguish a visit to Mestia from a demanding trek over high Svaneti routes.
May 26 is Independence Day, a celebration with the weight of Georgia’s long struggle for independence behind it. It belongs to the month as surely as the roses do, and it’s a day Georgians celebrate with joy and gratitude.

- Weather and planning: May’s comfortable temperatures don’t guarantee dry days. Bring a light rain layer and keep a little freedom in your plans.

- Gviriloba (Kutaisoba) (2 May), Kutaisi’s city day, with a story behind its daisies.
- New Wine Festival, the second Saturday of May at Mtatsminda, free, family cellars pouring the new vintage.
Places to visit
- Lagodekhi, forest trails and waterfalls running full with snowmelt.
- Kazbegi, Truso Valley and Juta open up as the high routes clear.
- Tusheti, tempting late in May, but Abano Pass opens only when conditions allow, so confirm before building a trip around Omalo.
Georgia in June
June is a good month for a wider journey through Georgia. The longer days help if you’re combining Tbilisi, Kakheti and western Georgia, and the coast is warming up. Lower walks offer more options too. A trip built around a particular high mountain route needs more care, especially early in June; July is usually the easier month to plan a high trek.
Galaktioni returns with მზეო თიბათვისა, addressing the sun of Tibatve, the haymaking month. There’s enough sun by June to start arranging your days around it, but warmth in Tbilisi doesn’t mean the snow has cleared from every pass.
- Temperatures in June: Tbilisi 28°C / 15°C; Batumi 25°C / 17°C; Mestia 15°C / 6°C.
- Weather and planning: Expect summer warmth in the cities and on the coast. Check the exact route before committing to a mountain trek.
Events and holidays
- Lomisoba (ლომისობა), a mountain pilgrimage on the Wednesday after Pentecost, sometimes falling in June; a living local observance, not a staged event.
- eZo, a boutique electronic festival in the hills around Tbilisi.
Places to visit
- Borjomi-Kharagauli, the lower forest routes before the summer heat.
- Bakhmaro, as its summer season opens.
- Racha, the wine villages around Ambrolauri and Nikortsminda cathedral, and up to Oni and Ghebi, beautiful before the crowds.
Georgia in July
July is one of the best months for trekking in Svaneti and Kazbegi, and for swimming on Georgia’s Black Sea coast. Svaneti is at its busiest, while Batumi and the nearby coast offer a straightforward seaside break. Tbilisi and Kakheti remain worth visiting, though the heat makes early starts more practical for sightseeing.
In the mountains, conditions can change quickly, especially on higher trails. In the east, July is hot and dry, with strong sun during the middle of the day. Along the coast, the air is warmer and more humid, and rain is still possible.
- Temperatures in July: Tbilisi 31°C / 19°C; Batumi 26°C / 19°C; Mestia 18°C / 10°C.
- Weather and planning: Plan for hot conditions in Tbilisi and the eastern valleys. Mestia’s temperatures refer to the town, not the higher mountain trails.

- Lataloba, celebrated in Latali, Svaneti, on the last Monday of July.
- Kvirikoba (კვირიკობა, 28 July), drawing worshippers to the cliff-top Lagurka church in Kala, Upper Svaneti.
- Tbilisi Open Air at Lisi Lake and Black Sea Jazz in Batumi, two major summer music festivals; check each festival’s annual programme for dates and venues.
- Art-Gene, the folk festival at Tbilisi’s open-air ethnography museum, late July.

- Ushguli, and the villages on the Mestia trekking route.

Georgia in August
August is a strong choice for trekking in the mountains or swimming on the Black Sea coast. Popular beaches, trail bases and accommodation can be busy, so arrange the important parts of the trip before arriving. Someone coming mainly for city walks and Kakheti may find May or early autumn more comfortable.
Mestia in August is not one fixed kind of trip. You might base yourself in town and take easy excursions, hike from village to village, or tackle long mountain routes that demand serious preparation. The month can offer flexibility, but your plans should ultimately follow the specific trail, weather forecast, and conditions on the ground.
- Temperatures in August: Tbilisi 30°C / 18°C; Batumi 27°C / 20°C; Mestia 19°C / 10°C.
- Weather and planning: Expect summer heat in Tbilisi and warm, humid days at the coast. Pack layers for mountain evenings and higher ground.

- Bakhmaro horse race (around 19 August), one of the summer’s most distinctive regional events.
- Peristsvaleba (ფერისცვალება, 19 August), Transfiguration, big in Tusheti and the mountain villages.
- Tushetoba, gathering Omalo in August; confirm the year’s date.
- Kolkhoba, late August in Sarpi on the Turkish border, a Laz festival built on the Argonaut myth.
- Mariamoba (მარიამობა, 28 August), the Dormition of the Virgin, a public holiday.
Places to visit
- Omalo and Dartlo, worth several days rather than a quick Tusheti stop.
- Glola and Udziro Lake, in Racha, for experienced hikers ready for a demanding overnight.
- Kvariati and Anaklia, the sea without Batumi’s peak crowds.
Georgia in September
September can bring several good trips together. Early in the month, mountain walks and Black Sea swimming may still be part of the plan; later, Kakheti and its grape harvest draw more attention. If joining Rtveli, Georgia’s grape harvest, matters to you, make arrangements with a winery or host rather than assuming that every vineyard harvests during the same week.
September isn’t quite one season from beginning to end. Its first days can keep something of August’s rhythm, while its last days begin to lead towards the food, wine and colours of October. Choosing which part of the month suits your trip makes September an even better answer than simply choosing September.
- Temperatures in September: Tbilisi 26°C / 14°C; Batumi 24°C / 17°C; Mestia 14°C / 5°C.
- Weather and planning: Early and late September can feel different, especially in the mountains. Batumi may still suit swimming early in the month, depending on the weather and sea conditions.

- Batumoba, Batumi’s city day, early September.
- Shatiloba, first or second weekend, horse races and Khevsur beer inside the tower village of Shatili;
- Alaverdoba (ალავერდობა), the pilgrimage feast at Kakheti’s tallest cathedral, running for days in late September.
- Tsinandali Festival, international orchestras at a Kakheti estate; check the year’s programme.
Places to visit
- Telavi, Tsinandali, Gremi and Nekresi, if wine and the Kakheti villages are the reason for the trip.
- Kobuleti and the coast villages, still working early in the month.
- Racha, Ambrolauri and Oni side as the first autumn colour arrives.
Georgia in October
Early October is an excellent time for Tbilisi, Kakheti, food and wine. Plan for a winery visit, time in the cities and meals that aren’t squeezed between long drives. A journey depending on a high pass or a long mountain trek is less dependable as the month goes on, so check conditions closely or choose an earlier month for that kind of trip.
Galaktioni’s “dazzling, coloured lionlike” October and ღვინობისთვე, the folk name for the month of wine, are already in the opening. They’re a good way to imagine the trip, but the pleasure of October is in giving it time: choosing a place, finding out what’s happening there and staying long enough to enjoy it.
- Temperatures in October: Tbilisi 19°C / 9°C; Batumi 21°C / 13°C; Mestia 8°C / -2°C.
- Weather and planning: Batumi remains mild but tends to be wet. Freezing nights become possible in Mestia, with colder conditions higher up.

- Svetitskhovloba (სვეტიცხოვლობა, 14 October), filling Mtskheta; go early, the road jams by mid-morning.
- Gurjaani Wine Festival, around the second weekend in Kakheti.
- Tbilisoba (თბილისობა), regional food, wine and performances across the capital, usually the first weekend; check the year’s dates.
Places to visit
- Sabaduri Forest, autumn walks paired with Mtskheta and Uplistsikhe.
- Bateti Lake, for its turning trees.
- Racha, Ambrolauri and Utsera at peak foliage, before the upper road closes.
- Vashlovani, back on the table once the summer heat has gone.
Georgia in November
November works for a city, culture and food trip if shorter days and changeable weather don’t trouble you. Spend time in Tbilisi, make room for museums and churches, and let meals be part of the trip rather than a stop between outdoor activities. November is a poor choice for Black Sea swimming or high mountain trekking.
November 23 is გიორგობა, St George’s Day, honouring the saint whose name and image appear throughout Georgian churches and family life. It gives the month a particularly Georgian date to notice, though a whole journey needn’t be built around it. November can still suit travellers interested in how people live, gather and eat, while those seeking a beach holiday may find the weather disappointing.
- Temperatures in November: Tbilisi 13°C / 4°C; Batumi 17°C / 9°C; Mestia 1°C / -9°C.
- Weather and planning: Batumi’s mild temperatures can give the wrong impression of beach weather. Keep indoor options and expect winter conditions at higher elevations.

- Erekleoba (7 November), Telavi’s day for King Erekle II.
- Mandarinoba, the mandarin harvest festival at Tsikhisdziri on the Adjara coast, around 21 November.
- Tbilisi International Film Festival, late in the month.
Places to visit
- Sighnaghi, for a slower Kakheti alongside Telavi.
- Kutaisi, with Gelati and Motsameta, then Tskaltubo and Martvili Canyon; check the canyon boats are running after rain.
- Vardzia and Rabati, in the milder south.
Georgia in December
If you’re coming to Georgia at Christmas, remember that Georgian Orthodox Christmas is on January 7, while Tbilisi’s lights, New Year events and Christmas markets may begin in December. Check the city’s programme for your travel year before choosing dates around a particular market.
Skiing may be possible at Gudauri, Bakuriani or other resorts once their seasons begin, but don’t book a fixed December ski trip without checking opening dates, snow and lift operations. If skiing is the main reason to come and your dates are flexible, January or February is easier to plan.
Families start working out who’ll visit whom, food becomes a serious subject, and the year seems to be heading towards one very long table. Arrive at the end of December and January’s celebrations make more sense, including the fact that another New Year is waiting 2 weeks later.

- New Year’s Eve, the biggest night of the year: rooftop fireworks past 2am, family tables until dawn, the chichilaki standing in for the tree.

- Goderdzi, the quieter ski option in mountain Adjara alongside Gudauri and Bakuriani.
- Kazbegi, Gergeti Trinity in deep snow, the road stays open.
- Mtskheta or Borjomi, easy additions to Tbilisi’s markets and baths.
The Best Time to Visit Georgia for What You Want to Do
For a First Trip
Choose May for Tbilisi, Kakheti, food, wine and comfortable days outdoors. Late September into early October is another good choice, especially if wine is a priority. With a week or more, spend time in Tbilisi and Kakheti, then add Kutaisi or one mountain destination that suits the season. See the May, September and October sections above for the trade-offs.

For High Mountain Trekking
July and August are the easiest months to plan a high trek in Svaneti, Kazbegi or Tusheti. Early September can work, but check your exact route, accommodation and transport. Conditions in Mestia or Stepantsminda do not tell you whether a trail higher up is ready. For Tusheti, confirm that the road over Abano Pass is open before travelling.
For Skiing
Start with January or February. March may also work at some resorts, depending on snow and lift operations. Gudauri is convenient from Tbilisi; Bakuriani pairs well with Borjomi; Hatsvali and Tetnuldi make Mestia a winter base. Check the resort and access road shortly before you travel, and make sure your insurance covers skiing or snowboarding.

For the Black Sea
Choose July, August or early September if swimming is the main reason for your trip. Batumi is enjoyable outside the beach season too, but plan those visits around the city, food and seaside walks. Book popular summer accommodation and fixed-date trains ahead.
For Wine and Rtveli
You can visit Kakheti’s wineries in spring or autumn; you do not need to arrive during the harvest for a good wine trip. If you want to take part in Rtveli, contact a producer before booking. Harvest dates vary by vineyard, grape and weather, and a tasting reservation does not guarantee a harvest experience.
For Fewer Crowds
April and October can suit a quieter trip focused on cities, food and lower walks. For beaches, skiing or high mountain trails, first choose a week when the activity is possible, then look for a less busy date within that season.
When Your Dates and Plans Don’t Match
Keep the part of your trip that fits the season and adjust the rest. May is lovely for Tbilisi and Kakheti, for example, but a demanding Svaneti trek is better saved for summer. In February, Mestia can be a ski base; a village-to-village walking trip calls for a different season. Let the specific activity guide your dates, even when the destination is the same.

What Is the Best Month to Visit Georgia?
May is the best month for a first trip with Tbilisi, Kakheti, food and time outdoors. Late September into early October is close behind, especially for wine and autumn. If you’re coming mainly to trek at altitude, swim in the sea or ski, choose the season for that activity first and build the rest of the route around it.
Is There a Rainy Season in Georgia?
There isn’t one countrywide rainy season that will describe the weather everywhere you go. Western Georgia and the Black Sea coast have a different rainfall pattern from Tbilisi and the east, so a single label won’t help much when you’re choosing a week for a particular route.
May can bring rain to Tbilisi even though it’s an excellent month to visit. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s monthly normals for Tbilisi record 81.8 mm in May and 87.7 mm in June. Use those figures to plan with some flexibility, then check the forecast for the actual town and days before deciding which outdoor plans go where.
Which Month Is Cheapest to Visit Georgia?
There isn’t one cheapest month for every traveller. The price of a flight depends on where you start, while a city break, a Batumi summer holiday and a ski week each have different periods of demand. Compare flights and accommodation for the complete trip before changing your dates because one month has been described as “low season.”
Can You Visit Georgia in Winter Without Skiing?
Yes. Give Tbilisi more time, add another city or a suitable lower-elevation outing, and plan with the shorter daylight in mind. Keep mountain excursions flexible rather than making the whole trip depend on one road or viewpoint. Winter makes a good trip when its slower pace and winter celebrations are part of the reason you’ve chosen it.
Is 3 Days Enough for Georgia?
Three days are enough for Tbilisi and perhaps a visit to nearby Mtskheta. They aren’t enough to see the country without spending much of the trip in transit. For a first visit that combines Tbilisi, Kakheti and one mountain region, allow around 7 to 10 days and leave some room between the longer journeys.
