Who Can Enter Georgia Without a Visa
Georgia, the country in the South Caucasus, runs one of the most open visa policies in the region. Citizens of around 94 countries can enter the Republic of Georgia without any pre-arranged visa and stay for up to 365 days per entry. That includes the US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, and the majority of the post-Soviet states.
The 365-day clock resets every time you leave and re-enter. Cross into Armenia or Turkey for a weekend, come back, and you get a fresh year. A lot of long-term visitors use this intentionally.
Visa-free status also covers more than tourism. You can register a business, open a bank account, and work remotely without a separate work permit.
Not every visa-free passport gets the full year. Georgia caps a handful of nationalities at shorter stays under the same zero-cost entry:
- Iran: 45 days
- China, Hong Kong, Macau: 30 days
- Chile, Fiji, North Macedonia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay: 90 days in any 180-day period
Georgia E-Visa Requirements
If your passport isn’t on the visa-free list, the next step is checking whether you qualify for Georgia’s e-visa. Applications go through evisa.gov.ge, cost $20 plus a roughly 2% bank processing fee, and take about 5 business days to approve.
The e-visa splits into two tiers:
- 90 days within a 180-day window: Bolivia, Cuba, Guatemala, and most Pacific and Caribbean island nations
- 30 days within a 120-day window: India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Egypt, and most of sub-Saharan Africa
Check your specific country before you apply. The difference between a 90-day and a 30-day allowance matters for trip planning.
The Third-Country Visa Exemption
This is the rule most travelers miss, and it covers a lot of people. If your passport normally requires an e-visa or an embassy visa for Georgia, but you’re holding a valid visa or residence permit from the US, UK, EU/Schengen area, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, or any GCC state, you can enter Georgia visa-free for 90 days within any 180-day period.
The permit has to be valid on the exact day you cross the border. Carry proof of it, physical or digital.
Republic of Georgia Visa: Embassy Applications
If you don’t qualify for visa-free entry, the e-visa, or the third-country exemption, you apply through a Georgian diplomatic mission abroad. The base fee is $20 for a standard short-stay visa, processing takes up to 10 business days, and multi-entry or expedited options cost more. There’s no visa-on-arrival in Georgia. This isn’t something you can sort out at Tbilisi airport.

Visa status and travel insurance are two completely separate things. Being visa-free for a year doesn’t exempt you from the insurance requirement, and neither does a shorter e-visa stay.
Every foreign visitor needs a policy that covers medical treatment and accidents, runs for the full duration of your trip, and carries a minimum benefit limit of 30,000 GEL (roughly $11,000 USD). Airlines have been checking proof of cover at check-in and refusing boarding without it. You can’t buy a qualifying policy at the border.
Passport Validity and Border Entry Notes
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity beyond your planned stay, regardless of visa category.
Holders of diplomatic, official, or service passports from countries that would otherwise need a visa are often exempt under bilateral agreements. If you travel on an official passport, check geoconsul.gov.ge directly for your country’s specific status.
Entry by air into Tbilisi, Kutaisi, or Batumi is the smoothest route. Land crossings, particularly Upper Lars from Russia and Sarpi from Turkey, can involve stricter document checks for e-visa holders and third-country exemption travelers.
